A snapshot of AASE history

'In 1974, the value of a national body devoted to the advocacy of quality education services for persons with disabilities, learning difficulties and behaviour disorders was increasing recognised by leaders of several of the state associations.... (Celebrating 100 years of Special Education in Victoria 1913 - 2013 by Tony Thomas 2018).

The Australian Association of Special Education (AASE) was formed in 1975, with Chapters in every Australian State and Territory. It was determined that AASE would be a national, independent, broad-based, non-categorical association existing through a a structure of national, chapters and branches. The inaugural conference was held in Brisbane in 1976. 

In 1977 'The Australasian Journal of Special Education' was first published.
